Lumbini is a Buddhist pilgrimage site in Nepal, believed to be the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, the historical Buddha. The site includes the ruins of ancient monasteries, a sacred Bodhi tree, an ancient bathing pond, and the Asokan pillar, erected by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE. Lumbini is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major center of Buddhist pilgrimage and study. It is considered one of the four holy places of Buddhism, along with Bodh Gaya, Sarnath and Kusinagara.
